APWEN COMMISSIONED MOTORISED LABORATORY IN BENIN

By Chris Akhabue

The  Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria(APWEN)  in collaboration with Nigeria National Petroleum  Corporation (NNPC) over the weekend commissioned an ultra modern science and technology laboratory in Ewuare primary school in Benin city the Edo State capital.

In a message delivered at the event by Mrs Precious Imuwahen Ajoonu, the national President of the Association, she pointed out that the project was the initiative of APWEN but sponsored by NNPC.

 According to her,
"This is another milestone in the annals of our history as APWEN partners NNPC for a common goal on the sustainability of community development for the girl- child in order to build her in science, technology, mathematics and create the consciousness for engineering courses".

"As an intervention to create awareness and stimulate the consciousness of the girl- child towards engineering as a course of study, APWEN decided to encourage the girl- child from primary 4 to 6 primary school pupils through practical demonstration of basic application of science and engineering to produce goods and services to meet the need of humanity. The project is aimed at inspiring the girl-child to take up sciences with a view to pursuing engineering studies."

She said the initiative started in 2018,
" it all began on the 18th of February 2018 when the executive committee of APWEN paid a courtesy visit on the management of the NNPC in Abuja with a view to soliciting assistance for the girl- child education  tag named "invent it build it"

She said though the programme is the initiative of APWEN, it is however sponsored by NNPC.

She observed that the maiden edition of the sponsorship was in Bauchi State in 2018 where scholarship was awarded to 21 best pupils   with a foundation laying ceremony for the construction of an Ultra modern science and technology laboratory.

In June 29th 2018 APWEN took the initiative to  Ewuare primary school in  Benin city, Edo State where 100 girls from 10  different schools in the local government area of the state were exposed to basic application of science, technology and mathematics through practical demonstration and afterwards gave full scholarship to 10 deserving pupils in Oredo local government area to study engineering in any of the Nigerian University and also promised to construct an ultra modern science and technology laboratory in Ewuare primary school."

"Today marks yet another mile stone  in our history as an association with the launching and   Commissioning of Engr. Valerie Ifueko Agberagba Science and technology laboratory with a motorized borehole which we hope will stimulate the interest of the girl-child pupils in the pursuit of engineering courses" .

According to the patron of APWEN, Edo chapter,Engr  Abanor who spoke with the press at the occasion  said the project was timely as the education of the girl -child in the past was not given its pride of place as we are  witnessing dominance of female engineers in the workplace now, stressing that it has become  important to educate the girl-child to understand and appreciate her potentials and importance of her self confidence and her participation in nation building. The STEM initiative ( Science, technology, engineering and mathematics) sponsored by NNPC is to inspire the girl-child that she has a role to the play in nation building but not just restricted to the kitchen.

Also speaking at the event, the commissioner of Education Mrs Joan Oviawe  through her representative promised to put the  science laboratory  to proper use while urging other well meaning individuals and corporate organisations to emulate the gesture and find similar ways to partner with the government in its pursuit of better Education for its citizens.

The Headmistress of  the school, Mrs Betty Idahor expressed her appreciation for the donor and promised to protect the laboratory and also appealed to the donor to consider extending same gesture to some other schools in the state adding that the laboratory would enhance teaching and learning in the school.
