Federal Road Safety Corps Auctions Accidented Vehicles



The Federal Road Safety Corps, Edo state command, yesterday auctioned unclaimed vehicles in its custody with the assistance of the Edo state branch of the Nigeria Association of Auctioneers.

The abandoned accidented and unserviceable vehicles have stayed more than a year at the premises of the Federal Road Safety Corps.

According to the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps Edo state, Paul John Okpe, pointed out that the Sector has decided to auction out abandoned accidented vehicles that have overstayed in the command.

" We are in the process of auctioning out vehicles that have overstayed in our premises in Benin and also at other commands we have across the state and as you can see, members of the public are here to witness the process of sales and members of the BoT of the Nigeria Association of Auctioneers as well as intending buyers.

" The process started with an application to the Corps Marshal for approval and then to the high Court and the court order was obtained which was also sent to the headquarters for final approval and the last stage is the proper auctioning and that is what we are about to do today.

"The process of sales and the bidding does not involve members and staff of the Road Safety Corps because we are the ones that apprehended these vehicles in the first place and therefore would not be morally wise for us to be involved in their purchase.

He therefore advised motorists to be cautious when they drive on our roads and highways to avoid accidents and to obey traffic rules and regulations and to ensure that they obtain their drivers licenses and other particulars to avoid incidences that could warant the seizures of their vehicles.

Speaking to the Press before the commencement of the auctioning, the state chairman of the Nigeria Association of Auctioneers, Edo state Chapter, Mr Anthony Orukpe Ebhotemen pointed out that the process of auctioning is starting today at the headquarters of the Road Safety Corps office in Benin city the Edo state Capital and that auctioning would be carried out in the other commands in the state.

According to him, " the Road Safety staff are strictly restricted from purchase of any of the listed vehicles for auctioning but strictly for the members of the public.

" We have made every possible arrangements for a peaceful and transparent auction sales which started with publications of notices to owners of the abandoned vehicles and a final notice was once again publish last Friday in the Vanguard newspaper. 

"Today, as you can see, we are here today with members of the BoT for the auctioning. As soon as the gavel falls, the highest bidders takes the item for sales and payment would be made to me and I will inturn return the money to the account officer representing the sector command who will thereafter raise RE remittance to enable us pay the money into the federal government coffers.

"At the issue of my receipt, the buyer is expected to remove the vehicle within twenty four hours without delay and a copy of the receipt will be with the Provost who is the custodian of what comes and out of the command .

Some of the accidented vehicles auctioned include among others, Toyota Camry, Toyota Yaris, Grand Cherokee, Volkswagen Audi, Ford Transit Bus, Volkswagen Gulf, BMW, Mercedes Benz and a host of other brands with auction prices ranging from Fifteen thousand Naira to thirty five thousand Naira only.

Speaking with Journalists at the venue, one of the buyers, Saturday Abulu, said he was very satisfied that the process went very free and transparent adding that it has been long that he experience such free and fair exercise of this kind.


Speaking with the Press after the event, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps Edo state, Paul John Okpe cautioned motorists to be careful while driving, advising that they observe and obey all road signs and regulations so as to avoid accidents.
