SERMATECH NIGERIA LIMITED ASSURES OF COMPLETION OF REHABILITATION ON BENIN BYPASS ROAD ON TIME... as Ikpoba Hill Youths Chairman tasks Fed govt to Ensure Comprehensive rehabilitation

The Chairman of Ikpoba Hill Youths Association, Comrade Kingsley Osemwigie has urged the Federal Government through the ministry of works to ensure a comprehensive rehabilitation of the Benin- Lagos, Benin-Onitsha bypass in Benin city, Edo state, considering the strategic importance of the road as a link between the Western, Eastern and the Northern states of the country.

He made the call when he, in company of some youths and leaders of the community paid an inspection visit to the contractor at the rehabilitation site at the bypass yesterday.

According to him, Let me start by thanking his Excellency, the Minister of Works, Engineer David Umahi for the construction work that is being carried out on the bypass in Benin. I am not very satisfied with the work that is being done. As you can see that this is not a comprehensive rehabilitation. We can not blame the contractor because it is the job specification given to him, the contractor is undertaking a palliative job as agreed between his construction company and the Federal Ministry of Works but we are only hoping that the ministry would later come and undertake a comprehensive reconstruction of the road.

"We are appealing to the federal government and the Minister of Works, His Excellency, Engineer David Umahi to come to our rescue to undertake a comprehensive rehabilitation of the road because as it is now in the next five months when it starts raining, the road would be completely washed off. We commend their efforts because half bread is better than non. What can we do other than to accept and appreciate the one we seen now and to pray, appeal and hope for the better.

Let me thank his Excellency, Mr Godwin Obaseki who did a remedial work on the failed portions of the Benin-Agbor road from the Ramat axis through Ikhuen to the bypass in last December. If not for that palliative, that stretch of the road would have been completely cut off by now and we are excited that the SERMATECH, the construction company doing the bypass would commence work of asphalting the Benin-Agbor Road starting from the Ramat through Ikhuen to the bypass just as you heard the contractor said just now and we are sure if that is done, we would be able to use the road without much trouble until a comprehensive reconstruction is done.

Speaking to this reporter at the rehabilitation site yesterday, a staff of SERMATECH Nigeria Limited Engineer Godwin Iweka said that the road rehabilitation project on the failed portions on the Benin- Lagos bypass from Oluku area to the Benin Onitsha bypass in Uteh in Ikpoba Okha local government area in Edo state by SERMATECH Nigeria Limited would be completed in two months from now.

"We have about two months to finish the rehabilitation work and we are fast tracking the palliative job so that we can finish before the rains start

We are maximizing the opportunity of the absence of rain using the advantage of the season to fast track our rehabilitation exercise to ensure that the palliative work is done on time and on specification.

"Eighty percent of the bulk of the job remaining to be done is in Ahor, Azagba, Ikhuen and Utesi in Ikpoba Okha local government area and Oluku in Ovia local government areas of Edo state and by Sunday this week we should have been done with these failed portions and we would be coming to fix the failed portions from Ramat Park to Ikhuen in Ikpoba Hill axis.

He said that SERMATECH is assigned to undertake a palliative job on the failed portions of the bypass road adding that the Minister has promised to undertake a comprehensive reconstruction of the road

Comrade Kingsley Osemwigie however pleaded to the Minister of Works, his Excellency, Senator David Umahi, to do a comprehensive rehabilitation of the road considering the strategic importance of the road as the link between Edo state and the Western States and Eastern and the northern states of the country adding that with the work already done now on the road may not last as there is stagnant erosion in many portions on the stretch of the road as the erosion would soon come over the asphalt as the rain starts and weaken it and sooner than later the condition of the road would be deplorable reminding the contractor that the palliative done on the failed portions in last December did not last as it is already eroded away with the first rain pleading with the Honourable minister of Works to do a comprehensive reconstruction on the road which is very strategic.
