SOUTH- EAST NLC, TUC PROPOSEN540,000, N447,000 AS NEW MINIMUM WAGE

Daily Post reports that the South-East branches of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have jointly proposed new minimum wage figures of N540,000 and N447,000, respectively, for civil servants. This suggestion was put forward on Thursday during the South-East Zonal hearing organized by the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage in Enugu State.

Representing the NLC in the region, Comrade Fabian Nwigbo, who is the Chairman of the NLC Enugu State Chapter, expressed the view that the value of the N30,000 minimum wage, which took effect in 2019, has been significantly diminished by inflation. Nwigbo argued that given the prevailing economic conditions in the country, it is no longer tenable to discuss a minimum wage of N30,000.

He lamented the unfortunate situation where Nigerian workers are purportedly the lowest paid among West African countries. Nwigbo emphasized the need to consider the prices of commodities in Nigeria, citing examples from 2019 when the minimum wage was implemented. He noted that back then, a paint bucket of garri cost N280, rice and beans were approximately N450 each, and fuel was priced at N145 per litre.

Highlighting the current economic challenges, Nwigbo pointed out that a litre of fuel now ranges between N750 to N800, and the prices of essential commodities have surged. For instance, a paint bucket of rice exceeds N4,000, and garri is priced at N2,500. Additionally, he underscored the escalating cost of living by referencing the housing sector, stating that a two-bedroom flat in Enugu, which used to be between N250,000 and N300,000, has skyrocketed to over N650,000 in the suburbs and N1.2 million in the city on an annual basis, adding that it was no longer reasonable to discuss the minimum wage of the Nigeria workers on the N 30,000
