Edo Government Issues Flood Alert, Warns Against Drain Blockage as Rains Intensify
From Chris Akhabue, Edo
The Edo State Government has renewed its warning about the increasing threats of flooding and erosion as the rainy season intensifies, urging residents to stop dumping refuse in drainage channels.
The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Kassim Afegbua, gave the warning while addressing journalists in Benin City, stressing the urgency of the situation.
He said the move followed recent advisories from the Federal Government on the growing dangers posed by climate change.
Afegbua described flooding and erosion as serious and recurring challenges that require urgent collective action, particularly during peak rainfall.
He noted that the state government is taking proactive steps through improved infrastructure and environmental planning.
According to him, ongoing road construction projects across the state now include drainage systems as a key flood-control measure.
He explained that these drains are designed to channel rainwater safely away from roads and nearby communities.
The commissioner cited the ongoing work around the Ramat Park flyover, where a large underground drainage system is being constructed.
Despite these efforts, he expressed concern over indiscriminate waste disposal by residents.
Afegbua warned that dumping refuse, especially non-degradable materials, into drains leads to blockages.
He explained that blocked drains prevent water from flowing freely, resulting in flooding that damages homes and property.
He urged residents to take environmental sanitation seriously and use designated waste disposal points.
He further added that many older roads in the state were built without proper drainage systems.
He however said that the government is now addressing those gaps, citing the Sapele Road reconstruction project with modern drainage infrastructure.
Afegbua also disclosed that public awareness campaigns have been intensified to educate residents on flood prevention.
Highlighting governance reforms in the state, he stated that the government has recently taken delivery of 50 CNG buses to improve service delivery and transportation across the state stressing that another 50 of such buses would be received in no distant time.
