GOV OKPEBHOLO: BECAUSE I AM INVOLVED

Image
By Fred Itua At every defining moment in a nation’s journey, the call to give account of stewardship becomes not just necessary but inevitable. This duty is more profound for those whom providence has favoured to sit at the helm, guiding the affairs of the state and shaping the future of the people. In 1989, the late Ikemba Nnewi, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, published *Because I Am Involved*, a 208-page introspective chronicle that offered a gripping account of his political convictions, nationalist ideals, reflections on Nigeria’s unrealised potentials, and the personal sacrifices he made for a country he so deeply loved. In that same spirit, this article borrows its title and energy from Ojukwu’s classic. *Because I Am Involved* is not merely a declaration; it is a commitment. Today, in Edo State, Governor Monday Okpebholo personifies that commitment. Since he assumed office, it is no longer business as usual. The tides have shifted, and the wheels of governance are now ...

UROMI KILLINGS: Untold Story of How Villagers Identified Some of The Kidnappers Before Lynching

Image
…Kidnappers fed a newborn baby to their dogs in the presence of the kidnapped mother The situation that took place in Uromi is regrettable and understandable at the same time. Regrettable because life, every life is sacred. In a normal functional society, people rarely resort to mob action and if and when they do, the consequences are usually dire. That is to be expected because the state provides adequate security for all to not warrant any resort to self help. As regrettable as the incident in Uromi is, no one living in that area can say he/she did not foresee the possibility of such an occurrence. The police in the area, if they write security reports to their superiors should have warned that this incidence was inevitable given the heightened state of insecurity attributable to a particular ethnic group operating in the environment.  The people are constantly under treat of theft, kidnapping, rape and gruesome murder in their farms with no one to turn for real hel...
