Edo LG Election: Labour Party Wants Certificate of Returns of PDP Candidates Withdrawn

The last may not have been held on the 2 September Local Government election held in Edo State as the Labour Party in the state has Monday, 18 September called for the cancellation of the election and withdrawal of the Certificate of Returns Issued the PDP candidates in election by the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC).

The Edo State chapter of Labour Party made the call while protesting the outcome of the election which it described as a sham and deplored the alleged refusal of the electoral umpire, EDSIEC to avail the party Certified True Copies of the election results to enable them file their complaints in the relevant Courts or Tribunal.

Speaking on behalf of party members who came out in their numbers to protest the outcome of the election, Chairman of the Edo State chapter of Labour Party, Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi noted that, "It is with grave concern that we express deep regrets over the purported conduct of the Edo edo State Local Government election allegedly held on Saturday, 2nd September, 2003 .

"The said election was marred with electoral Malpractice which involved but not limited to violence, non availability of EDSIEC staff and voting materials, the use of Vigilante groups to perpetuate violence, release of voting results in Units and Wards where voting did not hold, under supply of ballot papers, diversion of voting materials and other electoral vices perpetuated by EDSIEC in collaboration and active connivance with the Obaseki led administration all in the favour of the PDP. 

"Therefore, it is our well considered opinion that the purported election was a charade and consequent upon this, we are embarking on a peaceful protest on Monday, 18 September, 2023 to express our dissatisfaction and it is not acceptable as same as offensive barbaric out modelled practice, dangerous to democracy and against good conscience, equity and natural justice. 

"It is even more spurious, that EDSIEC has vehemently refused to give us the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the election results they declared, for us to use them in our Court/Tribunal pursuit of our legitimate claim of denial of our fundamental rights, and non-inclusion in the supposed Local Government Election. 

"Labour Party call for the withdrawal of the certificate of return issued to the PDP candidates as we reject in its entirety the outcome of the elections".
