Re-engineer Law Setting Up National Youths Service Corps -Comrade Roy Oribhabor

A Socio Cultural Group , the Concerned Edo Citizens Forum (CECF), has said that it has become imperative for the federal government of Nigeria to review the law setting up NYSC to enable graduates do mandatory one year military service with the Navy, Airforce or Army to equip them to contribute meaningfully to fighting insurgency and other criminal behaviors affecting the progress of Nigeria and Nigerians.

The group in a statement signed by the converner, Comrade Roy Oribhabor and made available to journalists in Benin City , said NYSC should be up graded to include military training due to the present security situation in the country.

According to Comrade Roy Oribhabor, with the high level of insecurity in Nigeria today, it has become pertinent to call on federal Government to review the law setting up NYSC to enable Graduates do mandatory one year military service with the Navy, Airforce or Army and other security agencies in order to equip them to contribute to fighting of insurgency and other criminal behaviors affecting the progress of Nigeria and Nigerians.

The statement further added that, "NYSC should be scrapped or redesigned to offer services that would help equip the graduates and ultimately the nation at large.

"As of today , NYSC scheme is moribund and outdated, the basic principles and doctrines are no longer relevant in today's Nigeria realities therefore, review is pertinent and necessary because drastic situations require drastic solutions.

"As concerned citizens,we are seriously bothered about the insecurity hence, we have to provide workable directions to enhance the security situation in Nigeria. Nigeria today is undergoing a serious challenge that needs urgent solutions because for over forty years of establishment of NYSC review is necessary now to make it more relevant in today's contemporary society. NYSC must be reviewed accordingly because security of all Nigerians is our primary concern and all credible sources must support the review of NYSC scheme to achieve more formidable output because most countries in the world have since embraced military training for young people, therefore, Nigeria Government must think along progressive thinking.

He further asserted that mere obstacle crossing as part of the training at the NYSC camps is no longer enough.

"Mere obstacle crossing is no longer enough considering the present day Nigeria, but detailed military training and orientation is the only way to go as this could go along way to solving not only the security challenges but partly the unemployment situation in the country as those who performed well in the training and are interested in taking up career in the military could be absolved.
