Festus Alenkhe: Fearless Crime Reporter and Architect of Public Trust

By Chris Akhabue

In the demanding and often perilous world of crime journalism, few figures have demonstrated the consistency, courage, and professional depth that define the career of Festus Alenkhe. Over more than two decades, he has built a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most formidable crime reporters,
combining investigative rigor with an unflinching resolve for truth.

As Assistant General Manager (News) and Defence and Security Chief at Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS), and Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, Alenkhe stands at the intersection of media leadership and frontline reporting. His career has been marked by a willingness to venture into high-risk environments, uncover complex criminal networks, and present findings with clarity and precision.

Crime reporting often demands proximity to danger, and Alenkhe’s professional journey reflects this reality. Known for his fearless approach, he has consistently pursued difficult stories, shedding light on criminal activities that might otherwise remain hidden.

His widely followed programmes—Crime Watch and Crime Alert, now rebranded as Security Watch and Security Alert—have become staples in public enlightenment, addressing security concerns across radio and television platforms.

His investigative work has extended beyond Nigeria’s borders, with reporting assignments taking him to Europe, the Middle East, and North America. Notably, he conducted a special report in Dallas, Texas, examining the assassination site of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy—an indication of his global outlook on crime and security issues.

Alenkhe’s academic background reflects a steady pursuit of knowledge in communication and international affairs. He began his education in Benin City before proceeding to the College of Education, Ekiadolor, where he obtained a National Certificate in Education in English/Linguistics. He later earned a Bachelor’s degree in International Studies and Diplomacy from the University of Benin.

Further professional training includes a Diploma in Broadcast Journalism from the New York Film Academy and a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism from the International Institute of Journalism, affiliated with the University of Maiduguri.

His additional certifications span areas such as media reporting, safety, and executive leadership.

Beyond journalism, Alenkhe has maintained a strong presence in public service and civic engagement. He previously served as Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (Edo State Chapter) and later led the Nigerian Red Cross Society in the state for eight years. His involvement has also extended to public health initiatives, including participation in Edo State’s COVID-19 response team.

As NUJ Chairman in Edo State, his tenure has been marked by infrastructural and institutional improvements. Under his leadership, the NUJ secretariat has seen upgrades such as enhanced security systems by fencing the Premises to prevent unauthorized access, improved connectivity with the provision of free WiFi access to all Journalists as well as visitors and other structural development, including the construction of a modern gate and signage for the press centre.

Alenkhe’s contributions to the profession and to the Edo State Council are invaluable and have consequently earned him numerous recognitions both within Nigeria and internationally. He is an Africa Ambassador of the World Safety Organisation and a Fellow of the Global Safety Institute. His role as a peace advocate has also been acknowledged by global institutions, reflecting his commitment to societal stability beyond journalism.

In 2024, he received an honorary doctoral award in London, further underscoring his professional impact. He has also participated in international forums, including representation at the United Nations Summit on Social Development in Doha, Qatar.
Advocacy, Mentorship, and Legacy
Central to Alenkhe’s work is a belief in the transformative power of information. He has consistently advocated youth engagement as a pathway to reducing crime and fostering a more secure society. His work seeks not only to inform but also to empower communities and challenge systemic issues.

An author as well, his book “Crime Watch: A Security Mirror of the Nigerian Society” captures his insights into the nation’s security landscape and the role of journalism in addressing it.

Despite his high-profile career, Alenkhe is widely described as unassuming and grounded. A sports enthusiast, he is a known supporter of Bendel Insurance Football Club. He is also a family man, balancing professional demands with personal commitments.

Festus Alenkhe’s career embodies the principles of investigative journalism—courage, integrity, and public accountability. In an era where security challenges continue to evolve, his work remains a vital contribution to national discourse.

His story is not merely one of professional achievement, but of sustained dedication to truth and societal progress—qualities that define the enduring relevance of journalism in a complex world.
