IKPEA’S TOWN HALL: A NEW STANDARD OF LEGISLATIVE ACCOUNTABILITY IN EDO CENTRAL
Ikpea Media Team Network
What Senator Joseph Ikpea did yesterday in Edo Central is exactly what representative democracy should look like.
By convening a town hall under the theme _“Deepening Legislative Accountability, Development Dialogue, and Inclusive Participation,”_ the Distinguished Senator has shown that he is very articulating in his doing, and more importantly, very deliberate.
*3 reasons this meeting matters:*
*1. Clarity Over Confusion*
For too long, our people have judged lawmakers only by roads and buildings. Senator Ikpea, with the support of elder statesmen like Gen. Cecil Esekhaigbe and legal minds like Rt. Hon. Patrick Ikhariale and Rt. Hon. Barr. Friday Ituah, took time to educate constituents on the constitutional roles of the legislature. Lawmaking, representation, appropriation, oversight. Not contract award. That is leadership.
*2. Unity Over Division*
At a time when politics divides, Ikpea chose unity. He deliberately opened the meeting beyond party lines to elders, women, youths, artisans, and market women. His message was clear: _“we have no interest in promoting divisions within the district.”_ That is the spirit of Martin Luther — speaking truth to unite a people for a common purpose.
*3. Action Backed by Method*
Despite coming in mid-budget cycle, he has already pursued interventions like the *Uromi primary school project* through the supplementary budget. As Chairman of the NDLEA Committee, he is also tackling the drug abuse crisis at its root, with NDLEA Edo Commander Dr. Mitchell Ofoyeju at the forum. That is methodological principle in action.
The promise of a comprehensive needs assessment across all wards and LGAs is the right next step. It will ensure that Edo Central speaks with one voice when we go to Abuja to demand our share.
*The emergence of an Esan-born Governor in Senator Monday Okpebholo is a political milestone. Now is the time for Edo Central to rally behind both the Governor and our Senator.*
This is what I call legislative idealistic art — turning dialogue into development.
*Esanland carry go! Na clear focus, na clear results.*
